GLP-1 guide: how it works, the full drugs list and side effects

Do GLP-1 drugs cause hair loss?
- Yes, in some people. Hair loss is on the FDA labels for Wegovy and Zepbound.
- The Wegovy label says hair loss was linked to weight loss. In its main weight-loss studies, 3.3% of people on Wegovy lost hair, vs 1% on placebo.
- In the Zepbound weight-loss studies, 4% to 5% of people on Zepbound lost hair, vs 1% on placebo.
- Very few people stopped the drug because of it. No Zepbound users in those studies stopped for hair loss.
Is GLP-1 hair loss worse for women?
- Yes, it was more common in women in the trials.
- Zepbound label: 7.1% of women vs 0.5% of men lost hair on the drug.
- Wegovy label: 4% of women vs 0.9% of men.
- A 2026 review also found that women seem to be hit more.
What does the new 2026 research say?
- A 2026 meta-analysis pooled 9 studies with 4,114 people on GLP-1 drugs. Hair loss was about 3 times more likely than on placebo. About 3.9% of users had it.
- A second 2026 review of 24 studies found semaglutide and tirzepatide had the highest rates. Higher weight-loss doses were linked to more hair loss than lower diabetes doses.
- It found that shedding after fast weight loss (telogen effluvium) and pattern hair loss were the most common types.
- The authors said bigger studies are still needed to prove cause.
Why does weight loss make hair fall out?
- Big body changes can push many hairs into a resting stage at once. A few months later they fall out. Doctors call this telogen effluvium.
- The American Academy of Dermatology lists losing 20 pounds or more as a common trigger.
- It is normal to shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. Shedding is when you lose a lot more than that.
Does GLP-1 hair loss grow back?
- Shedding usually does. The American Academy of Dermatology says shedding stops as the body adjusts, and hair tends to look full again within 6 to 9 months.
- If the trigger keeps going, shedding can last longer.
- Pattern hair loss (from your genes) is different. It does not stop on its own, but treatment helps many people.
Can peptides like GHK-Cu stop GLP-1 hair loss?
- We found no study in people that shows a peptide prevents or treats GLP-1 hair loss.
- GHK-Cu is in some hair and skin products. Copper peptide shots are not FDA approved.
- Do not stop your GLP-1 drug on your own. Talk to your doctor or a dermatologist.
When should I see a doctor about hair loss?
- You lose hair in patches, or your scalp is red, itchy or sore.
- Shedding lasts more than 6 to 9 months.
- You also feel very tired, cold or weak. Ask about thyroid and iron blood tests.
- You are a woman with a widening part or thinning on top.

FAQ
Does Ozempic cause hair loss?
Hair loss is listed on the Wegovy label, which is the same drug (semaglutide) at weight-loss doses. A 2026 review found it was more common at higher weight-loss doses than at lower diabetes doses.
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?
Mounjaro is tirzepatide, the same drug as Zepbound. Hair loss is on the Zepbound label.
Should I stop my GLP-1 if my hair falls out?
Talk to your doctor first. In the trials, very few people stopped for hair loss.
Will biotin stop GLP-1 hair loss?
We found no good study showing that. Ask a dermatologist before adding supplements.
How soon does GLP-1 hair loss start?
Dermatologists say shedding often shows up a few months after a big trigger, like large weight loss.
