GHRP-6
GHRP-6 is a lab-made peptide that tells your body to release growth hormone. Research in people is small. It is not FDA approved, and the FDA has safety worries.

Not approved in the US for anything. On the FDA Category 2 risk list for outsourcing pharmacies.
Hormone tests and a stroke trial that missed. Nothing on muscle.
Small studies and very sick stroke patients. The FDA says safety facts are thin.
Three separate grades: the law (not approved, on an FDA risk list), proof (no muscle trials), and safety data (thin). A missed trial is about proof, not safety.

What is it?
GHRP-6 is a lab-made chain of 6 building blocks. It was one of the first "growth hormone releasing peptides," studied in people years before ghrelin, the body’s own hunger hormone, was found. It sticks to the ghrelin spot, so it sends a strong growth hormone signal and a strong hunger signal.
Why do people use it?
Bodybuilders use it hoping to gain muscle and weight. Its big hunger effect is part of why. In Cuba, doctors have tested it, mixed with another protein called EGF, as a stroke treatment. In the 2000s, doctors used it with GHRH as a test for low growth hormone.
Does it really work?
Not for muscle. In healthy men, it raised growth hormone about 3 times, but cortisol about doubled too. In a 2024 stroke study, GHRP-6 plus EGF looked safe, but the bigger 2026 trial did not meet its main goal. Because EGF was always given with it, nobody knows what GHRP-6 alone did.
Studies in people
We found 6 studies in people. Two stroke trials gave it mixed with EGF, so they do not test GHRP-6 alone. None tested muscle.
| Study design | People | What they measured | What they found | Year | Journal | PubMed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Randomized, placebo, overnight | Healthy men (number not given in the summary) | Hormones and sleep | Growth hormone 15.4 vs 5.5 and cortisol 56.0 vs 25.2 vs placebo. More light sleep, no more deep sleep. | 1995 | Neuroendocrinology | PMID 7617137 |
| Small study, by mouth | 13 short children | Growth hormone after one dose | Growth hormone rose about as much as with the standard GHRH test. | 1995 | Eur J Endocrinol | PMID 7581965 |
| Diagnostic test study (GHRH plus GHRP-6) | 125 patients and 125 healthy adults | Whether the test spots low growth hormone | Worked as a test. No side effects were reported. | 2000 | Lancet | PMID 11030292 |
| Blood-level study, shot in a vein | 9 healthy men | How fast the body clears it | Half of it was gone in about 2.5 hours. | 2013 | Eur J Pharm Sci | PMID 23099431 |
| Small randomized stroke trial (with EGF), open label | 36 people after a stroke | Safety for 6 months | Looked safe. Serious problems were not more common than with usual care. | 2024 | Front Neurol | PMID 38638315 |
| Phase 3 stroke trial (with EGF), open label | 188 people after a stroke (95 vs 93) | Disability at 3 and 6 months | Missed its main goal. Only a small group with severe strokes looked better. | 2026 | J Clin Neurosci | PMID 42462342 |
Is it safe? Side effects
- It raises the stress hormones cortisol and ACTH, not just growth hormone.
- The FDA says it may raise blood sugar, because the body may respond less to insulin.
- In the 2026 stroke trial, serious problems were not judged to be caused by the treatment, but those were very sick patients given it in a vein.
- No one checks what is inside vials sold online.
Is it legal in the US?
GHRP-6 is not an FDA-approved medicine.
- On September 29, 2023, the FDA put GHRP-6 on its "Category 2" list of risky ingredients for big "outsourcing" pharmacies (503B).
- As of October 26, 2026, it is still on that list.
- For regular pharmacies, it is on "Category 3," meaning people asked for it without enough support. WADA bans it in sports.
What this means for GHRP-6
Banned in sports? Drug tests
Banned in sports.
Yes. WADA bans GHRP-6 at all times, in and out of competition. It is in section S2.2.4 of the 2026 list: GH-releasing peptides.
Talk to your doctor
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, tell your doctor before trying anything like GHRP-6. It can push blood sugar and stress hormones up. We never share doses or tell you where to buy. Print our doctor questions sheet.
More questions
Does GHRP-6 raise cortisol?
In one small study of healthy men, it raised the stress hormones cortisol and ACTH, along with growth hormone.
Is GHRP-6 the same as ipamorelin?
No. Both act on the ghrelin signal, but they are different peptides.
Is GHRP-6 a steroid?
No. It is a peptide, not a steroid.
Is GHRP-6 sold "for research only" OK for people?
No. That label means it was not made or checked as medicine for people. The FDA has warned sellers who used "research" labels on peptides meant for people.
