GHRP-2
A lab-made peptide that makes the body release growth hormone. It is not approved, and the FDA lists it as a safety risk for big pharmacies.

Not approved in the US for anything. On the FDA Category 2 risk list for outsourcing pharmacies.
Hormone and growth studies in kids and sick adults. Nothing on muscle.
Small, short studies, plus FDA reports of serious problems.
Three separate grades: the law (not approved, on an FDA risk list), proof (small hormone studies only), and safety data (very little). Low proof does not by itself mean it is unsafe, and the reverse is also true.

What is it?
GHRP-2 (drug name pralmorelin) is a lab-made chain of 6 building blocks. It was built in the 1990s as a stronger cousin of GHRP-6. It sticks to the same spot as ghrelin, the "hunger hormone," and that makes the pituitary gland in the brain let out a burst of growth hormone.
Why do people use it?
Gym users hope it builds muscle, burns fat or deepens sleep. None of that has been tested in a real trial. Its one real medical job is in Japan, where doctors use a GHRP-2 shot as a quick test to see if an adult makes enough growth hormone.
Does it really work?
Not shown for muscle, fat or aging. In 15 short children, a GHRP-2 nose spray sped growth from 3.7 to 6.1 cm a year, but there was no comparison group. In very sick men in intensive care, a 5-day drip brought growth hormone and IGF-1 back to normal. Those are hormone results, not muscle results.
Studies in people
We found 6 small studies in people. None tested muscle, fat loss or aging in healthy adults.
| Study design | People | What they measured | What they found | Year | Journal | PubMed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small study, no comparison group | 15 short children | Growth speed | Nose spray sped growth from 3.7 to 6.1 cm a year. Well tolerated. | 1997 | J Endocrinol | PMID 9390009 |
| Small study, no comparison group | 10 children with low growth hormone | Hunger and weight over 12 months (pills) | 7 of 10 felt hungrier. Weight for height did not change in a meaningful way. | 2003 | J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab | PMID 14513874 |
| Test study, single shot in a vein | 6 young and 6 older adults | Growth hormone and other hormones | Growth hormone rose a lot. Prolactin, ACTH and cortisol rose a little. | 1997 | Peptides | PMID 9285939 |
| Randomized study, 5-day drip | 33 men in long-term intensive care | Growth hormone and IGF-1 | Woke up the growth hormone system and brought IGF-1 back to normal. | 2002 | Clin Endocrinol (Oxf) | PMID 12030918 |
| Diagnostic test study | 77 healthy adults and 58 patients | Whether a single shot can spot low growth hormone | Healthy people peaked near 84.6, patients near 1.36 (µg/L). The test told them apart. | 2007 | Eur J Endocrinol | PMID 17609397 |
| Diagnostic test study (Japan) | 71 adults with pituitary tumors | GHRP-2 test vs the standard insulin test | The GHRP-2 test was an acceptable stand-in for the standard test. | 2013 | Endocr J | PMID 23079545 |
Is it safe? Side effects
- It raises more than growth hormone. In a 1997 study it also raised prolactin and the stress hormones ACTH and cortisol.
- It can make you hungry: 7 of 10 children taking it for a year said so.
- The FDA knows of reports of serious problems in people who got GHRP-2: needing more insulin for blood sugar, deaths of very sick study patients, infections, and pancreas swelling. It is not proven GHRP-2 caused them.
- No one checks what is inside vials sold online.
Is it legal in the US?
GHRP-2 is not an FDA-approved medicine.
- On September 29, 2023, the FDA put GHRP-2 shots and nose sprays on its "Category 2" list of risky ingredients for big "outsourcing" pharmacies (503B).
- As of October 26, 2026, it is still on that list.
- For regular pharmacies, it is on "Category 3," meaning people asked for it without enough support. WADA bans it in sports.
What this means for GHRP-2
Banned in sports? Drug tests
Banned in sports.
Yes. WADA bans GHRP-2 at all times, in and out of competition. It is in section S2.2.4 of the 2026 list: GH-releasing peptides, "GHRP-2 (pralmorelin)".
Talk to your doctor
If you think your growth hormone is low, ask a hormone doctor (endocrinologist) about a proper test. Bring up any plan to use GHRP-2, because it can change blood sugar and other hormones. We never share doses or tell you where to buy. Print our doctor questions sheet.
More questions
Does GHRP-2 make you taller?
In one small study of 15 children with short stature, it slightly sped up growth. It is not an approved height treatment.
Is GHRP-2 a steroid?
No. It is a peptide, not a steroid.
Is GHRP-2 FDA approved?
No.
