Do peptides expire? Storage and shelf life
"Research use only" vials have no tested shelf life. Germs are often the bigger risk.

Do peptides expire?
- Yes. Medicine can break down over time.
- FDA rules say an approved drug must carry an expiration date based on stability tests. If a drug is mixed with liquid before use, its label must give dates for both before and after mixing.
- A shot made by a pharmacy (compounded) gets a "beyond-use date" instead. That is the date after which it must not be used.
- A product sold "for research use only" has no FDA-checked date for use in people. Any date on it is only the seller’s claim.
Do peptides need to be refrigerated?
- Many do. Follow your label or pharmacy sticker.
- Zepbound and Mounjaro: keep in the fridge at 36°F to 46°F. Unopened, they last until the date on the box if kept cold.
- Wegovy and Ozempic pens: keep in the fridge before first use.
- Keep these drugs in their box to protect them from light.
- The FDA says improper storage, like a damp bathroom cabinet, can make medicine work less well, even before its expiration date.
How long do peptides last at room temperature?
- It depends on the product. These are the FDA label rules for 4 approved peptide drugs:
- Zepbound and Mounjaro single-dose pens or vials: up to 21 days total, at no more than 86°F.
- Zepbound and Mounjaro multi-dose vials and KwikPens: throw away 30 days after first use, after 4 weekly doses, or after 30 days at room temperature, even if some is left.
- Wegovy single-dose pens: up to 28 days at 46°F to 86°F, before the cap comes off.
- Ozempic pens: after first use, up to 56 days at 59°F to 86°F, or in the fridge.
Do peptides expire after reconstitution (mixing)?
- Mixing a powder with liquid starts a new, shorter clock. That is why FDA rules ask for a separate date after mixing.
- The FDA label for bacteriostatic water says: do not store drugs mixed in it unless the drug’s maker says you can.
- Germs are often a bigger worry than the drug getting weaker. Each time a needle goes into a vial, germs can get in.
- The FDA says vials with several doses should generally be used within 28 days after first use, because the risk of contamination goes up after that.
- We do not give mixing steps, ratios, or doses. Ask the pharmacist who filled your prescription.
How long do peptides last in powder form?
- For approved drugs, the label tells you.
- For "research use only" powders, nobody has checked how long they last for use in people. They are not made or tested as medicine.
- The FDA says products sold "for research purposes" are of unknown quality and may be harmful.
- Powder that looks fine can still be the wrong strength or not clean. You cannot see germs.
What is a beyond-use date on a compounded peptide?
- Pharmacies that make sterile shots follow a standard called USP <797>.
- The beyond-use date (BUD) is the date, or the hour and date, after which the shot must not be used.
- How long a BUD can be depends on how the shot was made and tested. Pharmacies that do extra testing, like sterility tests, may give longer dates.
- USP also says an opened multi-dose vial must be thrown away 28 days after the first needle goes in, even if its BUD is later.
- Use the date on your pharmacy label. Ask the pharmacist if you are not sure.
How do you throw away old peptides and needles?
- Needles: put used needles and syringes right away in a sharps container. The FDA says you can get FDA-cleared ones at pharmacies. If you do not have one, a heavy plastic jug, like a laundry soap jug, can work.
- Never put loose needles in the trash or recycling, and never flush them.
- Old medicine: DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sites take pills, patches, and liquid medicine sealed in its original container. They do not take syringes or other sharps.
- Many pharmacies and police stations have drop boxes all year. NABP’s Safe.Pharmacy site has a disposal locator.

FAQ
Can I use a peptide after its expiration date?
The FDA says no. Expired medicine can be weaker or risky, some can grow bacteria, and there is no promise it is still safe or works.
My medicine arrived warm. Can I use it?
The FDA says not to use a GLP-1 shot that arrives warm or without enough cold packs. Call the pharmacy. You can report quality problems to FDA MedWatch.
Can I freeze peptides to make them last longer?
Do not freeze Zepbound, Mounjaro, Wegovy, or Ozempic. Their labels say do not freeze, and do not use them if they were frozen. For anything else, ask your pharmacist.
How long does bacteriostatic water last after opening?
It comes in a multiple-dose vial. USP’s pharmacy standard says an opened multiple-dose vial should not be used more than 28 days after the first needle goes in, unless the label says otherwise. Its label also says it is prescription only.
What should the liquid look like?
Check the label. The Zepbound label says it should be clear and colorless to slightly yellow. If yours looks different, do not use it. Ask your pharmacist.
How should I keep peptides cold on a trip?
TSA allows ice packs for medicine. See our flying guide, and ask your pharmacist how to carry your medicine.
Do peptides have an expiration date?
Approved peptide medicines do. It is printed on the box, pen, or vial and is based on real tests. "Research use only" vials have no tested expiration date.
