Oxytocin (Pitocin)
A natural hormone. As a hospital shot (Pitocin), it is FDA-approved to help with childbirth. Nose sprays for mood or love are not approved.

The FDA approved it as a prescription medicine for certain uses.
Long, well-known hospital use. The FDA label lists its approved uses.
Decades of hospital use. Risks are on the FDA label.
These are 3 different questions. FDA status is about the law. Proof is about whether it works. Safety data is about how much we know about its risks. A lack of safety data does not mean it does not work, and "not approved" does not mean "illegal."

What is it?
Oxytocin is a small peptide hormone your body makes. People call it the "love hormone." A lab-made version is sold as Pitocin. It is given by doctors and nurses, in a hospital.
Why do people use it?
Doctors use Pitocin to start or speed up labor when there is a medical reason, and to help control bleeding after birth. Online, some people use oxytocin nose sprays hoping to feel calmer or closer to others, or to help autism. Those uses are not approved.
Does it really work?
For childbirth, it is proven and FDA-approved. For other uses, proof is weak. A big 2021 study of 290 kids and teens with autism found oxytocin nose spray worked no better than a fake spray (placebo) over 24 weeks.
Studies in people
| Study | People | What they found | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Randomized trial (nose spray, off-label) | 290 kids and teens with autism | No better than placebo for social skills over 24 weeks. | This is not the approved use. |
Is it safe? Side effects
- For labor, the Pitocin label says it must be given through a vein in a hospital, with trained staff watching.
- Too much can make the womb squeeze too hard, and it can even tear.
- Other problems on the label include feeling sick, throwing up, uneven heartbeat, and allergic reactions.
- The label says it is not for starting labor just for convenience (called "elective" induction).
Is it legal in the US?
Yes. Pitocin (an oxytocin shot) is FDA-approved for use during labor and after birth. (The FDA is the US agency that checks if medicines are safe and work.) Oxytocin nose sprays or drops sold for mood, love, or social skills are not FDA-approved for those uses.
What "not approved" does and does not mean
- With a prescription, it is legal to use for the uses on its FDA label.
- Doctors may also prescribe an approved drug for other uses ("off-label") when they think it is right for you. (FDA)
- Copies made by a pharmacy (compounded) are not FDA approved. The FDA does not check them before they are sold. State boards of pharmacy oversee most pharmacies. (FDA)
- Products sold online "for research" or "not for human use" are not the approved medicine. The FDA has warned companies that sold them to people. (FDA)
Banned in sports? Drug tests
Not named on the banned list.
Oxytocin is not named on WADA's 2026 list. It is an approved medicine, so the "not approved" rule (S0) does not fit. But WADA says its list is not complete. Check it on GlobalDRO.com or ask USADA.
