What is Hashimoto's disease?
- Hashimoto's is when your body's defense system attacks your thyroid. The thyroid is a small gland in the front of your neck.
- Over time this can make the thyroid slow. Doctors call a slow thyroid hypothyroidism.
- The NIH says Hashimoto's is 4 to 10 times more common in women than men. It shows up most often in women ages 30 to 50.
- A slow thyroid can cause tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, joint and muscle pain, dry skin and thin hair.
Are there peptides for Hashimoto's?
- Not approved ones. No peptide is FDA approved to treat Hashimoto's or to lower thyroid antibodies.
- We rate 3 things on their own: FDA status, proof that it works, and safety. Missing safety data does not mean a peptide does not work. It means nobody knows yet.
- People online often name thymosin alpha-1, BPC-157 and KPV. None of them is FDA approved for any use in the US.
Does thymosin alpha-1 help the thyroid?
- We did not find a study in people that shows it treats Hashimoto's.
- Thymosin alpha-1 is not FDA approved. The FDA once put it on its list of drug ingredients that may have big safety risks (Category 2). The groups that asked for it later withdrew their request.
- The FDA page still says thymosin alpha-1 may cause the body to react against it, may have impurities, and that its safety facts are "inadequate."
- Some people track their own antibody tests while using it. That is not the same as a real study.
- On PubMed, the only study we found on thymosin alpha-1 and thyroid swelling (thyroiditis) was in mice, from 1985. Mice are not people.
How do doctors treat Hashimoto's?
- If your thyroid works fine, your doctor may just check your blood levels from time to time.
- If your thyroid is slow, the NIH says the advised treatment is levothyroxine. It is the same as the thyroid hormone T4 your body makes.
- Doctors check your blood about 6 to 8 weeks after you start, and change the amount if needed. Then they check again each year.
- Grapefruit juice, espresso, soy, and vitamins with iron or calcium can change how well the pill works. Your doctor may ask you to take it on an empty stomach in the morning.
Do GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic affect the thyroid?
- The Wegovy and Zepbound labels have a boxed warning. These drugs caused thyroid tumors in rats and mice. It is not known if they do this in people.
- People with a personal or family history of a rare thyroid cancer (MTC) or a gene problem called MEN 2 should not use them.
- Hashimoto's is not on that "do not use" list. Ask your doctor if a GLP-1 drug is right for you.
- Tell your doctor about every drug and peptide you take, including ones bought online.
- Studies in people are mixed. A French study found more thyroid cancer after 1 to 3 years of GLP-1 use. A big study in Denmark, Norway and Sweden did not.
- If there is a risk, it looks small. See the study table below and our guide on peptides and cancer.
Do collagen peptides help Hashimoto's?
- We found no proof that collagen powder treats Hashimoto's.
- Collagen is sold as a supplement. The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold.
- The NIH says researchers are looking at vitamin D and selenium, but there is no clear advice yet.
- The NIH also says iodine pills and lots of seaweed or kelp can make a slow thyroid worse.
Which thyroid tests should I ask about?
- The NIH says doctors use blood tests for TSH, T4 and T3.
- They also test for TPO antibodies. Most people with Hashimoto's have them.
- Ask your doctor to explain your numbers. Do not change your thyroid pill on your own.

Key studies: peptides and the thyroid
| Study type | People | Main finding | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case-control study, France (GLP-1 drugs) | 47,746 people | 58% higher risk of thyroid cancer after 1 to 3 years of use | Looks back at records; cannot prove cause |
| Cohort study, Denmark, Norway, Sweden (GLP-1 drugs) | 437,077 people | No higher thyroid cancer risk (1.33 vs 1.46 cases per 10,000 people a year) | About 4 years of follow-up |
| Review of 64 randomized trials (GLP-1 drugs) | 64 trials | About 1.5 times the risk; about 1 extra case per 1,349 people over 5 years | Few cases |
| Mouse study, thymosin alpha-1 and thyroiditis (1985) | Mice | Changed immune cell responses in mice | Not people; very old |
FAQ
Is thymosin alpha-1 FDA approved?
No. It is not an FDA-approved medicine in the US. The FDA says its safety information is inadequate.
Can peptides lower TPO antibodies?
We found no good study in people that shows a peptide lowers TPO antibodies in Hashimoto's.
Can I take collagen with levothyroxine?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist. The NIH says some foods and supplements change how well levothyroxine is absorbed.
Is Hashimoto's curable?
The NIH says a slow thyroid from Hashimoto's can usually be fully controlled with thyroid hormone pills taken as prescribed.
Can Ozempic cause thyroid cancer?
Semaglutide caused thyroid tumors in rats and mice. The label says it is not known if it does in people. People with MTC or MEN 2 in the family should not use it.
Should I stop my thyroid pill to try peptides?
No. Never stop a prescribed thyroid medicine without talking to your doctor.
